Greek Salad Recipe

This is a recipe based on the traditional salad eaten in Greece and Cyprus. In those countries, it is often known as "village salad" or "country salad", although, of course, overseas, it is generally known as "Greek salad".

This salad is largely based on tomatoes and cucumber, but also includes feta cheese. Overseas versions of the recipe usually include more feta than native versions - you can of course choose how much or how little feta to use, when making the recipe yourself.

Village Salad (Greek Salad)

Here are the ingredients for making the salad:
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 bell pepper (green or red)
  • Pitted olives (½ to 1 cup)
  • Feta cheese
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Oregano
  • Olive oil
  • Red vinegar
  • Optional: ½ head of lettuce
Here is how to prepare the salad
  1. If you want to include lettuce in your salad, tear or shred it, and place the pieces at the bottom of your salad bowl.

  2. Cut tomatoes into quarters, and then cut each of these segments in half, and place these too in the salad bowl.

  3. Peel the cucumber, slice it, and place the cucumber slices also in the salad bowl.

  4. Add the pitted olives to your salad bowl.

  5. Peel and slice the red onion, and cut up the bell pepper (you should remove the seeds from the pepper), and top the salad with these vegetables.

  6. Finally sprinkle a little feta cheese (grated or crumbled) on top of the salad. You can use as much or as little feta as you wish.

  7. The salad should be seasoned with salt, pepper, and a little oregano.

  8. The salad is now ready to serve. When you are ready to eat it, drizzle with red vinegar and olive oil, and toss.
